Who doesn't want a pair of sewing scissors in the shape of a stalk? With a very fine blade for cutting threads and delightful engraving down the handle, they really are a thing of beauty.
Somehow these have stuck in my childhood memory as being the most glamorous item you could ever own! I think my father gave me my first pair when I started sewing lessons at school and I've treasured them ever since.
Apparently stork scissors were originally a small clamp like tool, in the shape of a stork, carried by midwives to clamp and cut a baby's umbilical chord. As a way of occupying themselves while waiting for the delivery midwives also tended to carry their needlework with them. Quite often their midwifery tools would end up in their sewing baskets, and so the tradition of embroidery scissors shaped like this began.
Scissors measure 9cm long and are best kept dry.
